Looking down the slopes of Chateau Ausone - April 2026
BORDEAUX 2025 REPORT
I spent nearly two weeks in Bordeaux in April 2026, tasting over 300 wines from the 2025 vintage in barrel, as well as more than 50 wines from the 2023 vintage. I started visiting Bordeaux in 1984 and have tasted barrel samples every May since 1998.
In April 2002, I participated in the UGCB-organized en primeur tastings for the 2001 vintage. I have returned to these tastings every year since then, except in April 2020 and 2021, when they were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Growing Season
The year 2025 started with a mild winter, during which enough rain fell to refill water reserves. Budbreak and flowering arrived early and proceeded smoothly and evenly, thanks to warm spring conditions.
The summer was very hot, with several heatwaves; temperatures reached 45.9°C in Pessac-Léognan in August. There were several long droughts and no rainfall for three months in many places.
Late-August rain saved, so to speak, the vintage. It refreshed the vines, accelerated ripening, and allowed them to reach a satisfying level of phenolic ripeness. The cool nights and moderate temperatures ensured that alcohol levels did not rise excessively.
Vineyards with limestone and clay subsoil did best. Those with sand as subsoil suffered the most.
Vineyard Conditions & Yields
Historic low yields: only 2.29 million hl, the lowest in 34 years, with appellations like Pomerol at 25 hl/ha and Margaux at 30 hl/ha.
The sanitary conditions were excellent. There were no frost, hail, or mildew issues. The low yields resulted from small bunches and tiny berries due to a lack of rain and extreme summer dryness.
Wine Style – red wines
The best red wines from this vintage are concentrated, displaying rich, expressive fruit from thick skins, along with wonderful structure and balance. They offer a long, mesmerizing finish. The wines show freshness and moderate alcohol levels and do not reflect the heavy, sun-drenched style despite a long period of drought. The wines are expressive and seductive.
The acidity is very pronounced, though not as thrilling as in 2023, while tannins range from silky and delicate to massive and rich. The 2025 vintage doesn’t have the opulence of 2022; it is fresher and doesn’t display the dry sensation on the back palate that I find in several 2022s. Stylistically, I believe it stands alone, but it also has some similarities to the concentration seen in 2020 and the freshness seen in 2023.
However, the quality of the 2025 red wines varies across Bordeaux. Top châteaux, with their resources and technical expertise, produced the finest wines, though there were a few disappointments among them. Some of these disappointing wines have been overdone. Several lower-classified properties, with no great soil to rely on, limited funds, and fewer technical resources, struggled with the drought, forcing them to either harvest too early or too late, often attempting to compensate by using extensive maceration or extraction.
For me, Graves/Pessac-Leognan is one of the most consistent performers in the 2025 vintage for red wine, closely followed by St. Émilion, Pomerol, St. Julien, and Pauillac. The Margaux commune did very well, too, but there were some unexpected disappointments.
The vineyards with limestone and clay subsoils did best. Those with sand as subsoil suffered the most.
There was an early harvest for Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon (mid-August), with Sauternes/Barsac starting in late September after early botrytis development. White dry wines are very successful and close in quality to the excellent 2023 vintage. The same can be said of white sweet wines, which benefited from ideal weather conditions and a rapid, homogeneous outbreak of botrytis. This secured another excellent vintage in Sauternes & Barsac.
The year 2025 has the potential to be a great-to-excellent vintage for many wines. We will know a lot more after bottling next year.
Quality of the visits
I want to express my deep gratitude to the owners and winemakers who took the time to meet with me and discuss the 2025 vintage. However, I must admit that I envy my well-known wine-critic colleagues, who often receive personal visits.
Regrettably, I felt overlooked on several occasions in Pomerol. For example, the owner/winemaker of a château, who was standing by the table next to mine, chose to engage with a large group for quite some time and didn’t come over to say, “Nice to see you here, Izak,” even for a moment.
These people should be very happy with the rating I gave their wines because I didn't deduct points for the low quality of the visit, which I maybe should have. After supporting Bordeaux for 42 years, I don’t think I deserved to be overlooked like that!
TASTED WINES:
Due to a very tight schedule, I haven't been able to incorporate all the visits I wanted into my visiting program. Furthermore, some properties didn't show their wines at the press tasting at Cité du Vin. I hope to catch up with TNs for several of these wines in September 2026 (Copenhagen - Beyerman tasting) and also when visiting Bordeaux in October 2026.

Lafleur: 49% Merlot + 51% Bouchet. Bouchet is a local name for Cabernet Franc. The aroma has plenty of spicy cherries, but on the tasting day, the wine seemed quite restrained. Trotanoy: 96% Merlot + 4% Cabernet Franc. Tiny yield of 15 hl/ha! What a wine! Everything is fabulous. It’s extraordinarily fragrant and intense on the nose, with wild cherries, blueberries, and blackberries; it's massive on the palate, with an iron-strong backbone, a stupendous midpalate, and a mesmerizingly long finish. It’s not too much, and the wine keeps its balance effortlessly. It’s like there is an extra layer of everything compared to recent vintages. I am speechless!
